I-5 in Vancouver to continue weekend road work
The Washington State Department of Transportation in Olympia reports southbound I-5 through Vancouver will continue work into the weekend. Crews are addressing rough and uneven pavement between NE 179th Street and the I-5/I-205 split. The 50-year-old stretch of freeway is expected to have lane closures, reduced speeds, delays and backups as crews work toward a smoother ride.
What is happening? Crews are using a machine known as the "guillotine," or drop hammer breaker. The device repeatedly drops a heavy weight onto the old concrete pavement, breaking it into smaller pieces. Crews then compact those pieces to create a strong foundation before paving over the top with new asphalt.
The process is called "crack, seat and overlay," and it allows crews to rebuild the roadway faster and more efficiently than a full reconstruction of the freeway.
Travel reminders in the work zone:
- Stay in your lane
- Expect delays and backups
- Do not drive the wrong way to avoid traffic
- Slow down and give crews space
